Easy Sugar Cookie Recipe | Personal Blog
Since I was a young girl, I was always obsessed with my mothers baking skills so you can imagine my delight when she shared this sugar cookie recipe with me. It’s an easy gift idea for bridal showers, anniversaries and even as a wedding favor if you have the time to spare!
You’ll Need:
Unsalted Butter (I’ve used salted though and the world did not come to an end)
Eggs
Flour
Baking Powder
Salt
Sugar (Confectioners and Granulated)
Vanilla + Almond Extracts
Bonus: Maraschino Cherry Juice
Once your cookie dough is made, you need to chill it at least one hour, I typically make mine and leave in the refrigerator overnight. It’s stiff when you bring it out but once you start to roll it out it is easy to work with. The cookie cutters I used were from Target and Michaels - Hearts in three sizes and a set that spelled out LOVE.
This recipe will make about 4-5 dozen cookies if smaller shapes like these.
The Recipe:
Cookies
1½ cups butter*
2 cups granulated sugar
3 eggs
4 tsps vanilla extract
2 tsps almond extract
4 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
In a large mixing bowl - cream (mix) butter + sugar until well combined.
Add in the almond and vanilla extract then the three eggs, one at a time. Mix until just combined.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt + baking powder
Add flour mixture (about 1/3 at a time) gradually to butter mixture and combine.
Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
After chilling, roll dough out and cut to desired shape or scoop to create circular cookies.
To bake: preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake 6-8 minutes, until edges turn golden.
Cherry Buttercream
3 cups powdered sugar
½ cup butter*
½ tsp almond extract
¼ cup maraschino cherry juice
Combine sugar, butter, extract and cherry juice together. To omit the cherry juice just use a little heavy cream to loosen up the buttercream as needed.
*Be sure your butter is softened for both the buttercream and the cookie dough, it should be pliable but not shinny. If it has gotten too soft - pop in in the fridge for a little bit to firm it up a bit.
The Final Result
The final product! This decoration is easy to accomplish with just a piping tip - I made 4 different colors with 4 different tips and just played with the decorations to make small flowers like this, but my kiddo enjoyed decorating them with just a butter knife too. I promise they taste great either way!
