Choosing the Perfect Location
For a cold-weather celebration, choosing the right location is key. Consider picturesque snowy landscapes, charming cabins, or even a rustic lodge to create a cozy and dreamy ambiance. Whether it's a mountaintop elopement or a wintry forest wedding, the backdrop of snow-covered scenery will add a touch of ethereal beauty to your special day.
My favorite easy outdoor spots for cold days that don’t require a lot of walking in the cold are South Mesa Trail and Red Rocks - both look phenomenal year round and are easy to access even in the snow.
Now, what if you were planning an urban backdrop or it’s just simply too cold to be outside?
Important to note, here are weather stats for how quickly frostbite can occur, its higher risk when it’s windy and dark out.
Last Minute Indoor Locations:
Denver offers a plethora of more “last minute” indoor location options for weddings, allowing couples to celebrate in style regardless of the weather. Some popular choices include:
This amazing vintage bar.
This minimalist studio with beautiful rentals available as well, Realm.
This Eclectic Indoor/Outdoor space.
You can also get a permit to shoot inside Union Station, rent a room and shoot at several downtown hotels (such as Hotel Teatro) and many other bars allow it with photography permits. So if you do get stuck in a polar vortex/bitter cold situation - all hope is not lost!
Here is a checklist of things to bring to a cold-weather elopement:
Warm Attire:
Dress in layers, including thermal undergarments, a warm dress or suit, and a stylish coat or shawl.
Don't forget gloves, hats, scarves, and cozy socks to keep extremities warm.
Footwear:
Opt for warm and comfortable shoes or boots that provide traction on icy or snowy surfaces.
Pack an extra pair of socks in case your feet get cold or wet.
Blankets and Throws:
Bring blankets or throws for yourself and your partner to stay warm during outdoor ceremonies or photo sessions.
Hand Warmers and Heat Packs:
Keep hand warmers and heat packs on hand to provide instant warmth during chilly moments. Here’s a link to my favorite ones.
Hot Beverages and Snacks:
Pack a thermos with hot cocoa, tea, or coffee to enjoy during breaks in the cold.
Bring snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or sandwiches to stay energized throughout the day.
Emergency Supplies:
Carry a small first aid kit, along with essentials like lip balm, hand lotion, and tissues.
Include any medications you may need in case of emergencies.
Wedding Essentials:
Don't forget your marriage license, rings, vows, and any other essential wedding items for the ceremony.
Bring a portable speaker for music, if needed, and ensure your photographer and officiant are prepared for the weather.
Backup Plans:
Have a backup indoor location or covered area in case of extreme weather conditions.
Create a timeline that allows flexibility for weather-related adjustments.
By packing these essential items and staying prepared for cold weather challenges, you can focus on enjoying the magic and romance of your cold-weather elopement without worrying about the chill.
