Questions to ask your wedding photographer or videographer prior to booking | By Colorado Wedding Photographer and Videographer Molly Margaret Photography
As a Colorado Wedding Photographer and Videographer, I’m frequently asked a lot of the same questions when consulting with couples who are deciding on their wedding photographer. It’s crucial to know what to ask and ensure you’re making the right choice!
WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE?
A photographers style is more than just a good instagram filter and an expensive camera, I encourage couples to ask this question to their potential photographer as it will help you gain some insight into their personal shooting and editing style. Also, make a list of keywords that draw you to certain styles and artistic vision. For example - do you want a fun, candid capturing photographer who looks for the little moments? Or is a posed, vogue and artistic style more your couple vibe?
When I am asked this question I respond: I am a wedding photographer/videographer and candid moment capturer who loves couples that embrace the chaos, love and jubilation that surrounds their elopement or big day. The biggest compliment I can receive is getting genuine full of happiness moments and laughs from my couples and clients. I edit in a true to color, darker style to create a classic image that will stand the test of time, trends and look beautiful in your home on the wall or in your cellphone while you share images via instagram.
HOW DO WE BOOK YOU?
What is your photographers booking system like? Do they mail a paper contract? Are they working with a CMS (Client/Customer Management System/Software) which will handle everything electronically? Also something to consider is how your photographer or videographer will accept payment. (Pro tip: NEVER book a creative or vendor for your wedding without a contract signed by both you and the vendor)
I personally use Honeybook (click that link for $200 off your first year!) which has awesome features like auto payment set up, digital contracts, meeting reminders and the ability to take notes directly into the clients file so I can remember all those important details!
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE CANCEL OUR WEDDING?
Each wedding photographer is different when it comes to a cancellation policy, it is crucial to understand their policy prior to signing. While it is industry standard that your initial payment holds the date and is not refundable it’s important to know if they offer a rebooking or credit option, such as the option to use the retainer towards another event or if the date should be rebooked, a refund may apply.

DO YOU USE ASSOCIATE PHOTOGRAPHERS OR VIDEOGRAPHERS?
While it isn’t always mentioned on their site or even during an initial consultation, many photographers use what are referred to as associate or lead shooters. Basically, they hire out the actual shooting of the wedding to another creative and then edit the work themselves (or outsource that as well). This is often utilized with busier photographers who may not be available your date but you still get a similar experience.
CAN WE SEE SOME OF YOUR WORK, OR WHOLE ALBUMS?
ALWAYS ask to see at least a few full albums of work, this way you can see how they handle different lighting situations, locations and people. If you already have a venue in mind, time of year in mind or time of day you should ask to see examples that pertain to what your wedding day will actually be so you can get a good idea of their work and how the images will end up.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU DONE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
While new to scene photographers offer a new perspective and often have a great talent for a lower price point - it is still important to know what their experience level will be.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'RE SICK THE DAY OF OUR WEDDING?
Look, wedding vendors are people too, and things happen that are completely out of our control. An experience professional will always have a backup plan should something happen the day of the wedding. It’s important to ask what this plan is, and of course if an issue comes up remember to give grace.
Fun fact: I broke my ankle at a wedding, and had to call in a replacement - thank goodness I had a just in case plan to enact!
HOW DO WE RECEIVE OUR WEDDING PHOTOS OR VIDEO? CAN WE SHARE THE IMAGES OR PRINT THEM?
Depending on the type of photographer, some charge for printing images or digital images. Ask the photographer and confirm what you will have access to once the images / films are edited.
ARE YOU INSURED?
Insurance, permitting and licenses when needed are so crucial to confirm you’re working with a professional creative who will uphold what is required of them for an event. Some venues require proof of insurance from a vendor and you don’t want to come up to an issue if they’re unable to accommodate that request.
