The most common question I get from couples when deciding their wedding package is - Should I have a Second Photographer - and while this is an entirely personal decision, there are many factors that come into play when picking a wedding package that either includes or gives the option to add on a second wedding photographer.
Pros of having a second photographer at your wedding:
Additional coverage of important moments | Are you and your partner getting ready at different locations? Will you have a large bridal party or a first look? All great reasons to have a second photographer!
The ability to cover multiple events at once | Think - candids of guests while the primary photographer takes family photos, or alternate views to your romantic couples session.
More photos without having to add on hours of coverage | Often a second photographer increases the amount of images delivered, this is not always the case though so be sure to ask your photographer.
They assist the primary photographer | You hired that wonderful wedding photographer of yours because, heck, you love their work! A second photographer/assistant does just that - they assist your photographer which helps them provide you with an amazing flawless day of coverage! This covers everything from ensuring your family photo list is followed, and your timeline goes smoothly. Personally I always have my 2nd assist me at family photos to make sure we get that list done efficiently and right!
Just in case | Another added bonus to keep in mind is that second photographers can take over should the primary photographer be injured, ill or otherwise unable to finish a wedding day. While we never want to assume something like that would happen, it is a good option to add some security to your wedding day.
Cons of having a second photographer at your wedding:
None | Ok, just kidding, but this should really be phrased reasons you donβt NEED a second photographer ;-)
Added cameras | Occasionally couples experience anxiety with photography - who doesnβt? An additional photographer can mean more cameras on you and your partner which may not be your ideal day. If youβre adding a videographer as well to your wedding day coverage you can end up with 4 cameras in your face at once - eek! An easy way to work with this but still have coverage is just to discuss it with your video/photo team prior to the wedding.
Price | Some packages cost more with a second photographer added on, while the benefits greatly outweigh the cost, this is something to take into consideration when booking your wedding photographer.
Questions to ask your Colorado (or Anywhere!) wedding photographer about their second photographers or assistants -
How do you pick your second photographers? Personally, I only choose photographers that I have worked with in the past either through other projects or working for one another. This way I can confirm what their style is like, how their raw images come through and how they interact with guests and wedding party members. You want to be sure your photographer is bringing someone along to your big day that is experienced and will add to the value of the day.
Will your second photographer cover the same things your cover, or be on their own? Second photographers are used how the photographer best sees fit but if you have a certain event that you may not be in the same place as your guests or other members of the party, let the primary photographer know! This way they can cover more than one thing at the same time! Examples include, getting ready in different places, guest candids, first looks and that ever beautiful moment of you walking down the aisle and your partner reacting.
